Split a stack of scanned homework by student and log who handed in what
Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet
For: Teachers who scan a pile of homework and sort it by hand
A Claude Code skill takes one batched PDF of scanned homework and looks at each page and reads the name written by hand. It matches names to your class roster, even with spelling slips, and next cuts the PDF into a separate file for each student and updates an Excel completion sheet. It also points out who has missing work and asks for a manual check.
Steps
- Scan a batch of homework into one PDF and prepare your class roster as a simple file.
- Work on a copy and try a small batch of 10 to 20 pages first.
- Ask Claude Code to read the name on each page and match it to the roster, and to list every uncertain match.
- Check the name matches by hand before anything is split or logged. The skill itself requires this step.
- For batches of more than 99 pages, use the session resume feature so a long run can pick up where it stopped.
- Review the completion sheet and the list of missing work before you contact anyone.
Starter prompt
I teach [class or subject]. The file [scan.pdf] is a batch of scanned handwritten homework and [roster file] is my class roster. Keep the originals untouched and write everything into new files. Trial first. Use only the first 10 pages of the scan, or 10 pages with made-up names that I give you, and a copy of the roster. Save the trial output in a folder called [trial], not in my real class folder. Step 1: for every page, read the name the student wrote and match it to the roster. Allow for spelling variations. Show me a table of page number, name read, matched student and how sure you are. Flag every uncertain match. Stop and wait for my yes after the table. Showing it to me is not permission to split anything. Step 2: after I confirm, cut the PDF into separate student files in a new folder and update a copy of my completion spreadsheet [spreadsheet file] for [assignment name]. Step 3: list students with no page found as possible missing work. Do not email or message any student or parent. If the batch is long, tell me how to resume from where you stopped.
