Merge monthly bank statements into one spending dashboard
Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet
For: People who want to see where their money goes without paying a full-time adviser
Miles Deutscher reportedly drags his monthly bank statements into Claude. It merges them, builds a dashboard to show spending and run the sums, and looks at how his portfolio is split. He double-checks the numbers because the model can make things up.
Steps
- Download the last few months of statements and remove account numbers.
- Upload them to Claude and paste the starter prompt.
- Check the monthly totals against each statement by hand.
- Treat any portfolio comments as notes to discuss with an adviser, not advice.
Starter prompt
I am uploading [number] monthly bank statements with account numbers removed. 1. Combine them into one list of transactions. 2. Group spending by category and month. 3. Build a simple dashboard showing totals, the top categories and the trend. Show the total per statement so I can check it against the originals. Mark any line you could not read clearly. Do not guess missing numbers. This is for my own review, not financial advice.
