Turn 20 YouTube videos into cited research notes you can search
Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet
For: Researchers and writers who learn a topic from many videos and lose track of the sources
The author made a Claude Code skill to control NotebookLM from the terminal. He found 20 videos, added them to a notebook and asked questions that came back with citations. Everything was saved to an Obsidian vault as linked notes, along with an audio overview and 58 flashcards. When he audited the citations, roughly 60% held up well, 31% partly and 10 to 15% barely.
Steps
- The author drove NotebookLM with his own Claude Code skill and terminal scripts, so set up some NotebookLM access first. You also need a Google account, an Obsidian vault and about 15 minutes.
- Choose a focused topic and pick around 20 videos worth using.
- Add the videos as sources in a new notebook and ask your questions one at a time.
- Save the answers into your vault as source notes and topic notes that link to each other.
- Spot-check the citations against the videos before you quote anything. In the source, a share were only partial or weak matches.
- Generate flashcards or an audio overview only after the notes look right.
Starter prompt
Before anything else, check that my NotebookLM access is set up: [the NotebookLM skill or command-line tool I use]. If it is missing or not signed in, stop and ask me setup questions. Do not guess and do not ask for my Google password. I sign in myself. Trial next. Use one public video, [video link], and a scratch vault at [scratch vault path]. Add that one video as a source, ask one question and save the cited note there. Show me the note and wait for my OK. Nothing goes into my real vault during the trial. After my OK, research [topic] in my Obsidian vault at [vault path]. Create new files only and do not edit my existing notes. Show me a plan first: how you will find about [20] relevant videos, how you will add them to a NotebookLM notebook and what the note layout looks like. I pick the videos. For each question I ask, save a topic note, with a source note per video and links between them. Every claim must say which video and where. Mark any citation you are not sure supports the claim. This job only writes notes. Stop and wait for my yes before anything leaves this machine.
