Research a company from its filings and ask for the bear case
Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet
For: Individual investors who hold stocks and want a sharper second look
Instead of downloading and skimming annual reports, the poster asks Claude Code a question about a company. It searches the web for 10-Ks, earnings call transcripts and other SEC filings, writes up the research and cites each filing so it can be spot checked. Requesting the downside case on a stock held for years raised concerns they had missed. They still make the call.
Steps
- Write the question you actually want answered about the company.
- Ask Claude Code to find the filings and transcripts and cite each one.
- Ask separately for the strongest case against owning the stock.
- Open the cited filings for any claim that looks wrong.
- Treat it as research only and make the buy or sell decision yourself.
Starter prompt
Research [company name] for me. My question is: [question]. Find the latest annual report, recent quarterly reports and transcripts of the latest [number] results calls. Answer my question with a short write-up and cite the exact document for every claim. Then write the strongest bear case you can for this stock. Tell me where the sources disagree or where you are unsure. This is research, not advice to buy or sell.
