Build a monthly reconciliation that flags what it is unsure about

Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet

For: Owners who reconcile hundreds of transactions a month and want fewer rows to check

The author got Claude Code to write a pipeline he can run again. Over MCP it fetched a month of entries from his accounting software, paired each bank line with a receipt using the date and amount, suggested a category plus a short why for every line, and flagged doubtful rows. Of 200 rows, 11 were wrong. Seven of those were in the 18 flagged rows, and four turned up only in his spot check.

Steps

  1. Connect the accounting platform with read-only access if you can.
  2. Tell the agent never to guess quietly, and to flag any row it is unsure of.
  3. Have it give a category and a reason for every row.
  4. Review all flagged rows, then spot check a sample of the rest.
  5. Watch for local tax rules and business intent, where most mistakes happened.

Starter prompt

Starter prompt. Change the [brackets] first.

Build a reusable script that pulls [month]'s transactions from [accounting tool], read-only. Pair each bank line with its receipt using the date and the amount. For each row, suggest a category from [category list] and give a one line reason. If you are not confident, flag the row instead of guessing. Do not write anything back to the accounting tool. Give me a file of all rows plus a separate list of flagged rows for my review.
