Log, sort, rename and file receipts every couple of weeks
Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet
For: Owners who drop receipts in a folder and catch up on bookkeeping later
A commenter tosses receipts into a folder as they are. Every couple of weeks, Claude in Cowork goes through them, logs each one in an expense tracker, picks a category, gives the file a new name made of the date, the vendor and the total, and moves it to a logged folder.
Steps
- Make an inbox folder for receipts and a logged folder for processed ones.
- Set up your expense tracker with the columns you need.
- Paste the starter prompt and check the first few entries.
- Review the tracker for errors and odd items, as the thread warned.
Starter prompt
Go through the receipts in [inbox folder]. For each receipt, read the date, vendor and total, choose a category from [category list], and prepare a proposed row for [expense tracker file]. Show me the rows and the proposed file names first. After I approve, add the rows, rename the files as [date_vendor_total] and move them to [logged folder]. Do not delete anything. List any receipt you could not read clearly.
