Have Claude fill in your income tax return on the government portal
Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet
For: Salaried filers with straightforward returns who dread the portal
A user gave Claude Desktop their salary slips and asked it to file a simple salaried return. The agent opened the tax portal, cross-checked salary against the government's record of income, handled a mid-year job change, recovered from session timeouts, fixed a validation error and submitted. No accountant was involved.
Steps
- Collect your salary slips, bank interest statements and the government's own record of your income.
- Ask Claude to compare your slips against the official record first and list any mismatches before it touches the portal.
- Sign in to the portal yourself. Never give Claude your password or one-time codes.
- Have it fill in the return up to the final step. Review every number against your documents before you submit.
- Submit it yourself, and download the acknowledgement for your records.
Starter prompt
Trial first: run the document comparison on [2] made-up salary slips and a made-up government income record, saved in [trial-tax]. Do not open the tax portal during the trial. I want to file my income tax return for [year] in [country]. My salary slips and bank statements: [attached]. I will log in to the portal myself. First compare my documents with the government's income record and list any differences. Then tell me which return form applies to me and why. Stop and wait for my yes before you enter anything in the portal. Fill in the form step by step and stop at the review page, with each figure shown next to its source document. I will check and press submit myself. If the portal shows an error, explain it and propose a fix first. Do not ask for my password, ID numbers or one-time codes.
