Gather tax documents and deductions into ready-to-enter spreadsheets
Idea + starter prompt, not run by us yet
For: Freelancers and consultants who dig through email and statements every tax season
Chris Blattman built Claude Code skills that find tax documents in Gmail, pull key figures and track what is missing. Another skill pulls deductions together from a donations sheet, emailed receipts and card statements, so the numbers can go into tax software. A self-employment income schedule came out of it too. Medical and childcare sorting stayed manual.
Steps
- Read Anthropic's privacy page, since files Claude reads are sent to its API.
- Never paste ID numbers or bank account numbers into the chat.
- Paste the starter prompt and let it build a list of documents found and missing.
- Sort tricky categories like medical and childcare yourself.
- Enter the final figures into your tax software yourself.
Starter prompt
Help me get ready for my [year] taxes. Do not file anything. 1. Search my email for tax documents from [list of senders or types]. Make a table of what you found and what still seems missing. 2. Build a spreadsheet of deductions from [donations sheet], [receipts folder] and [card statement exports]. 3. Total my self-employed income and expenses by category. Show me the table from step 1 before doing steps 2 and 3. Mark anything you are unsure of. Never ask me for ID or account numbers.
